Item-level RFID in apparel was once something global retailers piloted. It is now standard across much of the sector, because the numbers hold up — stock accuracy improves sharply, shipment errors fall, and the labour spent counting disappears.

For Bangladeshi manufacturers the requirement usually arrives from the buyer: a nominated inlay specification, a tagging requirement for a programme, or carton-level verification at dispatch. The factory or its converter then has to source against that specification.

Why Now

The pressure is arriving from three directions at once

Traceability is no longer a sustainability conversation. It is becoming a condition of holding orders — and the timeline that matters to a Bangladeshi factory is the buyer's, not the regulator's.

1. Regulation

The EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (EU) 2024/1781 introduces the Digital Product Passport — a verified digital record reached through a data carrier such as a QR code, NFC or RFID tag, covering fibre composition, country of origin, chemical safety, care, repairability and recyclability.

Critically, it applies to any brand selling into the EU regardless of where the garment was made. A label producing in Bangladesh and selling in Germany carries the same obligation as one producing in Portugal.

2. Buyers

Retailers and brands are expected to fold DPP data into supplier onboarding and contract renewal — which turns a compliance question into a commercial one. Suppliers unable to provide verifiable product data risk failing audits, losing listings and dropping out of long-term sourcing programmes.

This is the deadline that bites first. Buyer requirements typically land one to two years ahead of the legal date, and they arrive as a condition of the next order rather than a consultation.

3. The sector is already moving

In May 2026 BGMEA signed a memorandum of understanding with Dutch traceability platform AWARE to enable end-to-end traceability of fibres, yarns and garments through blockchain-backed records, positioning Bangladeshi exporters ahead of the EU rules.

Industry guidance suggests brands and their tier 1–3 suppliers need roughly two years to become DPP-ready. Factories that begin in 2026 or 2027 will be qualified suppliers when buyers start asking; those that wait will be answering questionnaires under pressure.

Straight Answers

What is actually required — and what is not

There is a great deal of confident misinformation circulating on this subject. Three points are worth getting right before anyone spends money.

NFC is RFID. The permitted carriers include printed QR codes and NFC tags. NFC is not an alternative to RFID — it is RFID, operating at 13.56 MHz. An NFC carrier is an inlay embedded in a hang tag or label. A brand selecting NFC for passport access has already selected RFID.

Batch, not item. The minimum data granularity specified for textiles is the production batch, not the individual garment. Item-level tracking remains voluntary under the regulation. Its value comes from buyer demand and operational return — not from a legal mandate. Anyone telling you item-level RFID is legally compulsory is overselling.

Dates are still moving. Published timelines differ between sources and have already shifted once. Current industry expectation places the textile delegated act around late 2027 to 2028, with compliance obligations following roughly 18 months later. Treat any specific date as provisional and plan against buyer requirements instead.

You do not need to solve DPP compliance today. You need to be capable of item-level identification when a buyer asks — and to have validated read rates on your own product before that conversation, not during it.

That capability starts with the right inlay in the right tag, tested on your actual garments and packaging. Sample validation costs very little and settles most of the questions that otherwise stall a programme for months.

Common questions on RFID in Bangladesh

What is the difference between an inlay, a tag and a label?

The inlay is the working component — a chip attached to a printed antenna on a thin substrate. A converter laminates that inlay into paper or fabric to produce a finished hang tag, care label or carton label. When a buyer nominates a chip or inlay specification, they are specifying the component; the finished tag is produced locally around it.

What is the difference between UHF RFID and NFC?

Both are RFID, differing in frequency and purpose. UHF operates at 860–960 MHz with metres of range and reads hundreds of tags at once — suited to stock counting, WIP and shipment verification. NFC operates at 13.56 MHz with centimetres of range and is readable by any smartphone, making it the practical choice for consumer authentication and product passports. Dual-frequency inlays carry both.

Can you supply against a specification our buyer has nominated?

Yes — that is the most common request. Send the specification including chip type, inlay dimensions, substrate and any performance requirement, and we source to it. Where a nominated part is unavailable or carries a long lead time, we identify equivalents and let you confirm them with the buyer rather than substituting silently.

How are payment and import handled?

Inlays are imported through standard back-to-back LC arrangements, the same mechanism used across the RMG trim and accessories supply chain. Commercial terms are set against specification and volume, and confirmed before the order is placed.
